Bad Job? Stop Whining and Take Action

You have to work to make a living, and when you have a job that pays well, it is hard to think about giving it up for a lower paying job that you may like better. What should you do if you find yourself unhappy with your job and complaining to friends, and family, and perhaps even co-workers? As your mom probably told you, "Whining never accomplished anything."

Start by Analyzing Your Job Complaints:

Start by figuring out what you can do to improve your present situation. Analyze your complaints. Is there something you can do that would improve the situation? Is it a temporary rough spot that will change in a few months, or is it something more permanent.

Can You Merge Your Interests with a Job?

If the only solution is a different job, make it happen. Begin by deciding what type of work you want to do. What are your interests, what do you feel passionate about, and what are you good at doing? If the work you would enjoy does not pay as well as your current job, be realistic about the consequences. Can you live on less income? Don't shortcut the exploratory stage. Take your time thinking through various choices. Talk to friends and family and get their opinions as well.

Setting Goals and Rewarding Yourself for Accomplishments:

Set a goal. Determine what action you need to take to accomplish that goal. It is possible, although quite rare, for the perfect job to come to you, but don't wait for that to happen. Do what you need to do in order to qualify for the job you want.

If you need additional schooling, enroll in a night class, or search the Internet for online courses. Seek out a mentor to advise you about the steps you can take to reach your goal. Network with like-minded people to gain additional insights. Develop a plan, break it down into small manageable steps, and work steadily towards your ultimate goal. As you accomplish each step, give yourself a reward to keep motivated.

Take Control of Your Life:

When the time comes to apply for the job you want, approach each interview with confidence and enthusiasm. Learn about the companies that interest you, and ask for interviews. When you meet with the managers, they will be impressed with your enthusiastic attitude and knowledge of their company.
